Heidi Kimberly Anne Dixon |
Heidi is very active in her school and community. She is a tutor with the Tutoring for Tuition program, a member of the "Beyond the Hurt" program, involved with the school book club, public speaking, drama productions and is a member of the Math League. She is also a volunteer at the local food bank as well as the hospital, The Salvation Army Thrift Store and with the "Coats for Kids" program.
Heidi is one of the most dedicated students that I have met in my career. She does a wonderful job of balancing her schoolwork with her volunteer work and her own personal interests. Heidi has a very positive attitude and is willing to work on and overcome any obstacle that comes her way.
I consider this candidate very worthy candidate for your scholarship. She is one of the most motivated, courageous students I have ever worked with. She has spent her life dealing with diabetes, a significant illness that impacts her entire life. She maintains an honours average while being very involved in a variety of extracurricular and volunteer activities. She is an exceptional person with many good qualities; kindness, compassion, empathy, thoughtfulness and good judgment. It is my pleasure to support Heidi Dixon for this award.

In Her Own Words
I am a diabetic and have been since I was 21 months old. My hope is to attend medical school someday in the future.
I am a Non-Status Indian and belong to the Gwich'in Nation in Inuvik, N.W.T. I have been raised and attended school in Newfoundland along with my brother and three stepsisters. I hope someday to go to the Northwest Territories to research diabetes in Aboriginal people.
After graduation I hope to obtain a science degree at Memorial University, the first step on my road to medicine.
